How to disable windows updates completely

Windows updates are automatic which are downloaded and installed without any interaction of the user. Microsoft knows that all of windows users are not that tech-savvy, they decided to make these updates automatic so that we (users) don’t have to search for and download these updates. This way every user whether tech-savvy or not will get windows updates equally. With automatic updates their point was to make our life easier with secure and smooth functioning machines but they did not knew we (the users) won’t like interruptions, the waiting for updates to install and machine restarts.

If you are happy with the windows installed on your computer and don’t want any new updates from Microsoft, we will show you 2 methods for how to disable windows 10 updates permanently.

How to stop windows 10 updates through group policy:

Before proceeding you should know that this method does not work in Windows Home edition, because group policy editor in not available in windows home edition.

1. Press windows button + R on your keyboard OR go to start menu, type run and click on Run when appear.


2. Type gpedit.msc in Run text input field and click OK to launch group policy editor.

3. Click on Computer Configuration and then double click on Administrative templates.

4. Double click on Windows components, scroll down to locate Windows update and double click on it.

5. Double click on Configure Automatic Updates.

6. In Configure Automatic updates settings select Disabled and press OK button for the settings to take effect.

If you change your mind in the future and want to get new updates for windows, just follow exactly the above steps and select Enabled in the last step. After this you will get automatic updates normally.

How to stop windows 10 updates through windows registry:

You need to be careful using this method of editing windows registry, it is recommended to create a backup disk of your windows which will be helpful if anything unexpected happens.

1. Press windows button + R on your keyboard, or go to start menu, type run and click on run to launch it.


2. Type regedit in run input text field and press OK button to open windows registry editor.

3. In Registry editor double click or click on the small arrow next to expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE then double click on SOFTWARE, then Policies then Microsoft then Windows then WindowsUpdate then click on AU. The complete path should look like this in the registry editor address bar HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU .

If you cant find WindowsUpdate under Windows HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows then go to step 5 below.

4. Double click on NoAutoUpdate and enter 1 in the value data input field and press OK button.

5. If you are at Windows and unable to find WindowsUpdate folder like this HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows. Right click on the Windows (folder) key, select New from the right click menu and click on Key. Enter WindowsUpdate (without any space) as the new key (folder) name.

6. Right click on the WindowsUpdate key (folder), select New from the menu and click on Key, enter AU as the new key name.

7. Click on AU key(folder) and then right click on the empty space on the right pane, select new and DWORD (32-bit) value. Enter NoAutoUpdate as the name for this new DWORD.

8. Double click on NoAutoUpdate and enter 1 as the value in the input field and click OK Button.

If you have followed the above steps correctly, congrats you have disabled windows 10 updates permanently. Entering 1 as the value for NoAutoUpdate disables auto updates. If you want to enable automatic windows updates again in the future enter 0 as the value for NoAutoUpdate.
